There’s been a slow but fundamental shift. I decided things will not get in my way of doing what I want to do in my life. Most importantly, I’m doing my best to not let myself get in the way. Here are the six reasons I do what I do.
I still have my legs under me. At any time, something might change my life. I want to take advantage of what I have while I still have it. Injury, sickness, and age can turn alter my life in an instant.
Certain responsibilities are not tying me down. I do not have an apartment lease, a mortgage payment, children, or a significant other that relies on me being around.
Life is too short. My cousin Jeff died when we were seven. My Uncle Ed died he was 55. We never know when our time is up. A long chronological life can end up being short in living. I live for today and for tomorrow. I try to live my life as if I were already dead and live only as a memory. How would I want to be remembered? How would you like to remembered?
No More Regrets. Even if I die at 120 years old, I don’t want to lay in my death bed with too many regrets. The biggest regrets I have had so far was not doing something or going somewhere. I want to put an end to sentences that begin with, “I should have…”
People inspired me to have no more excuses. Some people had good reasons not to achieve what they achieved. Despite barriers to their goals, they pressed on and realized their dreams. Frank McWorter, an American slave, bought his family’s freedom and founded a town in 1936 where black and white families lived together peacefully on the Illinois frontier. Instead of preparing to die from ALS, Jon “Blazeman” Blais decided not to be a victim and raced the Ironman Championships at Kona and waged war against ALS so other may live. These individuals and others had reasons much bigger than my excuses yet they kept on pushing.
My time is valuable and I’ve become impatient. I can’t wait for other people or the perfect time to do something. Those moments may never come unless I do something about it. Time is a resource I can not get back. I can not sit still and let it waste away.
Theses are the five things that create the momentum in my life and keeps me going. What motivates you and how is it allowing you to live a better life? If the things in your life don’t motivate you, what would you like to change to get you going?
